Teaches Japanese linguistics, phonetics, and phonology.
Vance is the author of two books, An Introduction to Japanese Phonology (1987) and Instant Vocabulary through Prefixes and Suffixes (1990; re-issued in 2002 as Building Word Power in Japanese: Using Kanji Prefixes and Suffixes). He has been coordinating editor of Japanese Language and Literature (the journal of the Association of Teachers of Japanese) since 2000, and he served as resident director of the Konan Year-in-Japan program in Kobe during the 2005-06 academic year.
